the best thing to use is white vinegar. Hard water stains are usually caused by minerals in the water...the best thing for getting rid of the deposits is to use white vinegar. It's safe, cheap, non chemical and works very well with very little scrubbing. Just put a fair amount in the water slowly...depending on how bad the stain is use the better part of a quart the first time. let it sit over night or during the day while you are working (preferably during atime when no one will be using the toilet over at least a couple of hours) then just use the toilet brush and give it a good going over. if there is a stubborn spot, use a scrub sponge and work it out.
If this is a long on going problem..you might have to do this a couple of times over a few days...but once you get it there..you can keep in maintained with a short soaking time once every week or two.
I live in the netherlands and we have extrememly hard water in our city and this is the best method i have found.

VERY SIMPLE! BLEACH is your answer! Pour in an entire gallon of bleach or more depending on how high the ring is- and it will work miracles! Let it sit for a good hour and the stain will be gone! Simple and cheap!

Try a pumice stone. It cleaned my toilet bowl when chemicals failed. It is abrasive but not as hard as the bowl material so it didn't scratch. I found one at Walmart.

I would use CLR to get the stain out. I put a plastic bag over my hand, took a pad with an abrasive side, put CLR on it and scrubbed. It came off very easily.
Cheers and good luck

First try Kaboom. It works wonders. If for some reason that does not work then try a pumice type stone.
