No, parts of it are taken from different things that really happened, but it did not happen like it is portrayed in the movie

no not at all which i myself did not know until today. there was a horrible guy from Wisconsin Edward Gein that did unspeakable things and murdered at least 2 women which is who the writer/director Tobe Hooper based the character leather face on.He got the inspiration for the movie while shopping in the hardware section of Montgomery's wards and there was a display of chainsaws. the following site will answer all your questions. Dang I really thought the story was true and that the news reel at the end of the 2003 movie was actual footage

Yes.
Here's the basic cenario of the real Texas Chainsaw Maccacre:
It was a small town, and everyone in the town was involved. When a newcomer would come along, the people of the town would coax them into His (whatever his name was) house so he could kill them.
I dont remember the name of the town, but my boyfriend went there when he was 4 with his dad to see Texas. (they went to every city/town, etc)
see the townspeople would help out this murderer by taking a limb and hiding it somewhere so no one would find an entire body. In those days, in order for someone to be arrested for murder, they have to find the whole body.
so basically the killer dude was crazy and the entire town was in on it and alot of people were murdered. I have done alot of research on this and found all of this to be true- pretty gross, isn't it?
hope that helps!

the story is not a true story. They took Ed Gein's story which is nothing like the true story and added a whole lot more. Ed Gein robbed graves and made stuff out of the flesh. He also murdered a woman and gutted her out like a deer and ate her flesh and served it to his neighbors. The story of Ed Gein is really nothing like the story of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Ed Gein wasnt even from Texas, he was from Plainfield, Wisconsin (30 minutes from where i live).

It's loosely based on Ed Gein- he was also the subject for Silence of the Lambs. He wore peoples skin as clothing and made a woman suit of sorts. Really creepy. He came from an ultra-conservative Christian home and his mother kept him super sheltered. He said that the women he killed all reminded him of his mother. But who knows.

No, but it is based off of real serial killers... from Wisconsin. Ed Gein mostly, I believe, though I think parts were taken from Gacy and Dahmer as well. Ed Gein would skin his victims and make lots of things from their skin (from lampshades to clothes), then eat their meaty parts himself and/or sell them to local butcher shops and give them to neighbors. He just told everyone the meat was venison from deer he shot during hunting season. Seriously creepy guy.
So, yeah... The TCM guy isn't real, but based off of a real person (maybe people, not too sure on Gacy and Dahmer) and none of Gein's crimes took place outside of Wisconsin.

Yeah. If you look it up or buy the special edition dvd, there are actual case photos and everything. There is a picture of him, but it is only that side shot of him slapping the camera away. All yo can see is his eyeball. It all happened in Travis County, TX.
