Couldn't that be because it's out of ink?
Pity is that you didn't specify the Printer make and model and the Computer system Configuration and the OS you are operating on, because that would have helped me to give you the steps with which you could check for the level of ink in your cartridges.
However, generally, any color printer begins to print color in black and white only when the color cartridge is out of ink.
May I suggest that you have the supplier have a look at it, or, call him on the phone and specify the Printer make and model, your OS and he'll help you find the level of ink in the cartridge so that you can opt for a purchase from him.
Cheers

The colored ink often runs out before the black and white. Pictures you print use an enormous amount of colored ink. Insert a new colored cartridge and problem solved.

Sometimes you can set your printer to print just in black and white, to save on the more expensive color cartridges. If you are only printing a letter or a document, no need to use color. It depends on what brand of printer you have, to change it back to use all colors, hit the color button on the top of the printer. Mine is an epson, so yours might be in a different spot..

Check the printing preference by righ clicking on the printer icon in the control panel. Make sure the box under "greyscale printing" is unchecked.
Thats if you are using windows.
