First of all, you have to like it. If you are not the lead horse, the view never changes. You will always be looking at a bunch of horse's behinds. Having said that....the irony of real life is...

1. To lead, you walk behind them. You laugh with them, you cheer them on but you never let them see you cry.

2. You get people to do things they do not necessary want to do but you know they are necessary tasks.

3. Never let them upward delegate. Know your job is different than theirs. Let them know you expect them to do their job better than you can. That is why they are there.

4. When things are good, it is their territory. When things don't doesn't go that well..."what do you want to do boss ?". Sounds familiar? Never let them do that to you. They want your opinion? let them come to your with the problem and two alternatives before you sit down with them. Otherwise, you end up doing everyones job and your subordinates will never learn to think on their own. Accountability is the key word.

5. Lead by example. People are a lot smarter than you think and they will see right through you if you are not straight.

6. Management by persuasion, not mandate. During crisis situations, your can dictate for short durations.. When there is a fire, there is no time to discuss. However, during normal times, you do better by sharing with your people why it is good to do certain things and certain manner.

7. Establish mutual expectation. If you expect me to be there for you, to make sure the pay check is there every Friday, to fight for you when you need help, what can I reasonably expect out of you on a day to day basis?

8. Never be afraid to change your team. There are only two ways why things do not get done....you either don't know how to or you don't want to. Don't know? I will do everything to teach you. Don't want to? I will try to convince you. Still don't want to? I will replace you. You don't do that, the results will not be there and you are the one that is going to be held accountable for the failure.

These are just a few random ideas. Hope they help.

To be a good team leader you should be organized to the nth degree and able to multi-task but most of all you should make the extra effort to listen and monitor your team's health and morale.

Listen. Listen. Listen. Refrain from making judgements. Encourage and praise publicly. Reprimand privately and keep it between you and that team member. Nevertheless, word has a way of leaking out, so you must do what you can to maintain your integrity.

Consistency helps, as does empathy but also strength (without stubbornness). Grow a thick skin. Sometimes you'll get all kinds of stuff tossed at you but suck it up. NEVER allow yourself to get into a public argument with someone. If they're upset, accusatory or otherwise negative, let 'em go ... for a while. But bring it back to the issue at hand.

Be a role model. Look around at the rest of the team. Are there leadership qualities among them that you enjoyed, would like to have? Emulate and have them (the values) in you.

Some tips on how to be a leader:
1.Begin with praise and honest appreciation.
2.Call attention to people’s mistakes indirectly.
3.Talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person.
4.Ask questions instead of giving direct orders.
5.Let the other person save face.
6.Praise the slightest improvement and praise every improvement. Be “hearty in your approbation and lavish in your praise.”
7.Give the other person a fine reputation to live up to.
8.Use encouragement. Make the fault seem easy to correct.
9.Make the other person happy about doing the thing you suggest.

Enjoy!

To be a good team leader you have to be strong and firm in your decisions. More importantly though you need to have the constitution to put your subordinates in their place with whatever means necessary; this could include any or all of a swift back hand slap, verbal depreciations, and manipulative tactics.

If you gain the respect and trust ofyour team, you will be a great team leader - lead by example, not from afar. Know what your staff is doing - support them in public, chastise them in private.
