I'm confused, you indicaded that it won't play any DVDs that you burnt in your DVD drive, but that you can still burn DVDs in the drive. Then, you said something about if you put one in it won't work? What do you mean by that? Do you mean it won't burn the DVD, or once you burn the DVD you can't read the DVD?

If it's the later, then maybe the drive isn't burning the DVD all the way like you think it is. One way to test it would be to put the DVD into another DVD player to see if it plays or not, or to check the contents of the DVD on another computer if you have access to one.

Unless you opened up your computer and were mucking about inside or added any additional drives, you should not need to open up your computer to mess with the data cable or the drive jumpers (especially the drive jumpers).

I did a search and it looks like you're not the only one who has experienced the problem with it. Unfortunately, I did not see a sollution to the problem.

Have you tried to play a prerecorded DVD in the drive to see if it plays? I think, it uses the same laser for reading and writing, so if it can't read then it stands to reason it can't write either. I think, when it goes to write the intensity of the laser is pumped up so that it can write to the disk.

Did you burn the DVDs on the drive in your computer, or did they come from somewhere else? The format from someone elses burner and burning program may conflict with yours. I've had this happen with DVDs burnt to +R and to -R discs that would not play in a certain older model RCA DVD player. They did play in a newer model RCA DVD player.

ARe you sure it's actually burning them? It may just be fried. I've seen players lose the ability to play burned disks while still playing pressed ones.

i am getting that plenty on my historic laptop, it might be a few kind of registry errors. do this: Step one million. Reboot and spot if it really works Step two. If it does not first placed the disc you wish to realize after which reboot once more. See if it really works It could take greater than the primary reboot.

Last resort would be to replace the IDE ribbon cable.. You were on the right track with updating the firmware.... Could be the jumpers on the back as well, but I really doubt it.
