I didn't find New Jersey, Vermont, New Hampshire, Kansas, Oregon, and California to be welcoming and amiable. Michigan is not on my "tops" list, but was much better than I thought. Florida, Ohio, and New York are welcoming, but only as long as they're taking you're money. Kentucky is welcoming only if they know you or you are kin to somebody; otherwise, they are very impolite, unhelpful, and snobby.

Wow, a lot of southern states near the top of the list. Defies logic. I'd have to disagree.

Think about this - the South had a culture of slavery. How welcoming is that?!? Enslaving your fellow man has to be about the rudest and most unwelcoming act committed by people.

In 1860, there were 6.4 million free people and 3.7 million slaves living in the South. That is one slave for every 1.7 free people! Incredibly unwelcoming. Unless southern mentalities regarding their fellow man have changed 180 degrees (unlikely), the south is extremely unwelcoming.

Has it really changed that much in the South? How?

I love how the previous answerer bring up slavery. Nevermind that it happened OVER 170 YEARS AGO!!! And everyone directly involved in dead. That's just like saying that if you visit Germany and you are Jewish the Nazis will kill you. Nevermind that most people in the South aren't racist, and NO ONE currently in the South owns any slaves!
Anyways, I pesonally believe that it's too much personal opionon to declare which state is the most welcoming and the least. I've been to just about every state in the union, and most people there are nice. I
had a good experience in Hawaii- the people there were very nice. Texas people were also rather nice. In fact, every state has nice people, just as they have mean people. The only place that stands out for having an overwhelming majority of mean/non-helpful people was West Virgina and Kentucky.

Well, I've been to most of the states and I would have to say:

Most welcoming: South Dakota, Washington, West Virginia,

Least welcoming: New York, California, Texas (too full of themselves)

The most welcoming state is Michigan. I went there one year during the summer and it was nice and cool with temps in the 60's. The weather is perfect up there. The least welcoming is Tennessee. I was miserable the whole visit

This is pretty general--but Texas is pretty friendly and California and New York seem as if they aren't, but I think it's also pinning big city next to little city. In a smaller place, people tend to be more friendly, but in big places where bad things tend to happen more often than in the others, people tend to be more cautious and less trusting. However you can always find good and bad people wherever you go.

each to his own! I think you will have a big argument going here, since every one will want there home state first on the list, In that case . OHIO, KENTUCKY, MICHIGAN, most southern states rank at the top ,too.

Now that's one messed up list! Utah shouldn't even be on there and Oregon is the friendliest state I've ever been in. Michigan was nice too. Especially in Kalamazoo! You've been visiting the wrong places Tex! Utah! Ha-ha-ha-ha! LOSER!
