OK. The Jamestown Colony was started in 1602 on the penisula north of the Chesapeake Bay. In order to survive and make England happy, they grew tobacco for export back to England. And it all started there. ALL economic devlopement in that area is a result of that one thing. Look up the history of Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg--try www.colonialwilliamsburg.org for some more info.There is still tobacco manufacuring all along the James River into Richmond, VA.
