How much do jeans shrink, and do they shrink width-wise?

Question

I know most jeans will shrink in length about an 1/2 in/1 in, but do they also shrink a lot width-wise? Specifically the Levi's 518 superlows.

Jeans will shrink lengthwise, and also widthwise, however, they will also stretch back out width wise due to wear and movement, and often stretch too much. For example: say I was a size 6 and the jeans look kind of big to begin with (vanity sizing is becoming increasingly popular.....) I might try a 6 on on to compare. The 8's might fit perfectly in the fitting room, but after wearing them, they will stretch, same after washing. Wash in cold water, inside out to preserve the color, use the air dry setting in drier for about 15 minutes and then hang them to dry. If you are worried the jeans will shrink too much in length, look for jeans in tall or long. I hope this helps!!!

I don't know about today, but back a few decades ago...yeah I'm that old....we used this standard: 1inch for the waist and 2 inches for the length. If we kept them for a long time we gave them another inch in length.

Shrinking will affect all sides.

yes, everywhere. I suggest washing them in a cold-water wash load and hang drying them by the ends (up-side down by the pant legs). This always works best and allows you to keep your jeans longer!
