Mother's intuition I guess. Tonight before falling asleep she cried unconsolably for an hour. This kid never cries. I was sick all last week and now I'm taking a heavy dose of a chinese herb and breastfeeding at the same time. The herb is fine for nursing but I am taking a heavy dose, and yes, my lactation consultant approved the herb. I am so stressed I wanna cry!!! She keeps waking up & crying! Is that enough of a reason to take her to the doc? She has no other symptoms, just crying. She's 8 months old, and never does this...

she probably senses that you are not yourself. If there is no other symptom, she should be ok. Trust your instinct though: you know your baby, I don't! if you are worried, take her to the doctor. But consider the fact that babies can pick up on our mood so fast and so well... she is probably stressed as much as you might be! good luck

Maybe she has a tummy ache. I remember my son had this crying litany when he was 4 months old. in desperation, I turned him on his tummy and rocked him on my forearm. It's fraught with danger and a sleepy caregiver is multiplying the risk of a fall.
On hind sight, I think putting him on his tummy on his cot would have had the same effect of calming him. You must clear everything from her cot or sleeping area and her mattress must be rigid and no pillows. This is to prevent accidental suffocation.

The tummy can give problems especially if mum is taking some extraordinary supplements. If you can stop it, it would be best and baby should recover within days. At eight months she should be starting on semi solids. ABOVE ALL, do not stop breastfeeding. THAT is not the problem. Check out if it is the heat that is causing the problem. Some herbs actually make a person uncomfortably hot and baby is all too susceptible.

Go with your instinct. You are the mother.

If she eventually fell asleep and sleeps well through the night I would not worry too much. Check on her often thru the night to keep yourself reassured and to make sure all is well. If she is unusually fussy tomorrow I would call the Dr. Better safe than sorry. But many kids go thru phases where they don't want to sleep and it could be due to a number of things. Seperation anxiety, not feeling well or something as simple as her room being too hot or cool, etc. Also if she is learning a new skill like walking or crawling. She could just be fighting her normal routine now. Most kids do that at some point, bedtime is no fun Mom! As far as handling it goes if that is the case, checking in on her every 10 or 15 minutes but not getting her up. Be firm and consistent but assure her that you are close by. It's hard but she'll eventually learn to go sleep on her own. For your own reassurance a call to the Dr. in the AM would not hurt anything at all.

I can't be sure because you know your baby more than anyone else does. It could be that the herb your taking is upsetting her little tummy or it could be that she is catching what you have! Has she cut any teeth yet? Does she have fever? Gas? It could be so many things but my hunch is that she isn't feeling well.

Your really lucky that yours doesn't cry much. My baby has cried for the entire six months of her life and she is one of those colicy/moody babies. When she cries and cries I usually try to walk her around, show her a toy of interest, or do something to calm her down and then she's ok within minutes. Good luck.

Stop taking the chinese herb, that is probably why she is crying, it's upsetting her stomach. I really wouldn't take anything that isn't FDA approved while breastfeeding, since you don't know how it really affects your body, you won't know how it affects a baby through breastfeeding. Especially, if you are taking a "heavy" dose. Nothing should be taken in heavy doses unless you are really very sick!

Well since this behavior just changed and you just added the chinese herb I would reconsider using the herb. It could be upsetting her stomach even though it is approved by a doctor. A doctor can say its safe but can not prevent it from having side effects on your baby. Maybe you can talk to your doctor about other methods of treatment available.

Good Luck

Just because it's doctor approved doesn't mean it's okay for everyone. Stop taking the herb for a few days and see if her crying stops. Sounds like it's the herb that's doing it since the crying jag started when you started taking the herb.

Could be the new herb. I would stop it temporarily and if your baby still cries, it could be something else you are eating that she may have an allergy to. Everything you eat goes to baby. If you drink a lot of milk, could she be getting traces of lactose that disagree with her. I would start listing every food you eat daily and consult your lactation nurse and you may have to start eliminating types of foods until you find the problem. I breastfed all my babies and would eat something for a while and they would have no problems and then suddenly they would start having digestive problems or allergies and I would have to change my diet again. I hope you find it fast. You are doing a great job and kudos to you for nursing!!

Let me start off by saying thay I am a 15 year old boy, and not a mother by any means... but, as a baby my parents tell me that when I was almost a year old I also started crying all the time... I'm fine now and nothing was wrong.... I know this isn't a for sure answer or anything, but good luck, and I hope nothing is wrong.

Definitely try the Mylicon drops right before bed time. This week I had a similar experience with my 6 month old - she was very fussy to go to sleep and woke up many times at night crying. Tonight is the 3rd night in a row, since giving her the Mylicon right after bathtime, that she is not crying. (Knock on wood!)

Maybe you should just follow your "mothers intuition" and take her to the doctor. You know what's normal for your baby. Incidentally, my kids never show symptoms of anything when they get sick, I only find out when all of a sudden they cry every time I put them down.
