assuming that the equation is equal to zero:

5y - 50 = 0

add 50 to both sides

5y - 50 + 50 = 0 + 50

the 50's cancel out on the lhs leaving

5y = 50

divide by 5

y = 50/5 = 10

y = 10

5Y - 50 = 0

Then

5Y = 50

And

Y = 10
