To be honest, I am new to deer hunting in Illinois. This is what I know about it:
To be upfront and honest, I am a Wisconsin deer hunter that happens to live in Illinois.
After living here for 9 years, I decided to try and hunt deer here in IL. I am pretty dumb yet as to hunting deer here.
The following is a list of public hunting areas in the state of Illinois:

For gun deer hunting, a permit is required to hunt on these lands. Some permits are still available when I looked today for the late season on a lottery basis. Selection for the third “winter” season hasn’t been done yet. I think archery deer goes through a similar process, but I haven't looked as I don't bow hunt.
After you get a permit, you need to get a license and a stamp I believe.
All I can say is that it would be nice to have a printed regulation book. This state sucks.
As to where is a good place to hunt? Not the slightest clue.
You always hear about Pike county in the hunting mags..
