Being a history nut, I at once thought of slavery--it was a miserable chapter in our country's past, in which human beings were treated like cattle, or even worse than cattle.

Think of it--the constant supervision, the threat of being sold away from your family or vice versa, the complete lack of any real say in your destiny--it took mighty strong folks to survive that, or even to just live under it without losing one's mind or sense of self.

There is also the parallel with the sex trade mentioned by another person answering your question--slaves were just as vulnerable to sexual exploitation as any of the young women (or young men!) in Third World countries that end up as sex toys for tourists.

So, I suppose it's really pretty much an ongoing mess.

Funny, how the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Well, slavery for one. This country was built on it. And also what Career Student said. It's still around and in the U.S.

the time before the civil war was full of human trafficing.

The bigest problem with human trafficing that involves US citizens is "sex tourism". fat loser american men travel to 3rd world countries to have sex with slave girls. the girls are usually in their early teens when they are forced into prostitution. fat loser american men support it by sustaining the demand for low cost, disposable girls.
