Notice how towns and cities tend to be located next to rivers? This is no coincidence. Rivers provide water for the essential needs of both tiny towns and huge cities. There's a good chance that you live near one of our nation's large rivers.
1. Rivers provide water (drinking, food, cleaning, power, etc)
2. They provide a way to get there (by boat - to trade with other villiages and for easy accessibility)
3. More animals live near water so they themsleves can drink, so you can hunt them
4. Water is needed for crops to live and people need crops to live

i am not sure but i would figure that they did it because they needed a water supply, also they liked the idea of animals coming to the river so they could hunt easier, easy to find your way back home if you follow the river, and i am at a loss for the fourth reason
