Having lived in both... Madrid

Barcelona is probably the better city for a visit but to live in it isn´t.

Catalans do not see themselves as Spanish. They have more in common with their N European neighbours France however this is not to say they are not nice people in their own right. I have just found them, on the whole, to be harder to intergrate with as they prefer to stick with other catalans. Those that I have become friends with it has taken time but are now some of my best friends.

Madrid is far more open and although friendships with people tend to be a little more shallow the volume more than makes up for this. The city itself is more historically and culturally rich than Barcelona but it doesn´t have the natural benefits of Barcelona, Skiing and Beach.

I chose Madrid as I am more of a People person than anything else but others would value more the cities amenities. I love Madrid and went so far as to put together a website about it.

Barcelona for the reasons everyone else has explained. Now if you are a nitty bitty whiner and nationalism doesn´t fit into your premade mind bent on an old world order, you may have to consider Madrid. Some spaniards are against Barcelona and/or Catalonia having their own identity. But they have their own identity, that´s whats makes Barcelona/Catalonia such a multicultural place. Excellent!

Barcelona! To me this was one of the best countries I ever visited. You have a little bit of everything there - amazing & very unique architecture, great food, the beach, nightlife, Olympic stadium - I could go on and on...
