The moon "waxes" and "wanes", which means that for 14-15 days it appears to get larger and then for the next 14-15 days it appears to get smaller and finally disappears briefly. Then it comes back a night or two later, very tiny, and waxes again for another fortnight.

The point at which it comes back and you see it very tiny is called the "New Moon". A week later it is called "first quarter". When it is at its maximum size, big and very round looking, it is called the "Full Moon". 7 or 8 days later the moon looks half the size it was when full and this is called the "third quarter".

This effect is only an appearance to our eyes, if you were out in space you wouldn't see it like that. It looks that way because the moon rotates on its axis as all solid bodies in space do. The rotating means we see more or less of the moon on different nights.

The whole cycle from one New Moon to the next is called the "lunar month". 12 lunar months take 354 or 355 earth days. The Islamic Year is measured by 12 lunar months and that is why it is shorter than the solar year (the year measured by the earth going round the sun).
