I'm chinese and my dad has this long fingernail, but it's not that long, it's long enough so that he can pick out his earwax! >_<
Anyways if you remember the spooky fu mancho character, he had this long fingernail on the little finger. It is derived from an ancient chinese custom. It denotes class, beauty and wealth, as it shows you don't need to perform any manual labour. Just to rub it in you could wear expensive fingernail protectors, just to show off your wealth. Just to add: I don't have a long little fingernail, but I do keep my thumb nail slightly longer mainly for practical reasons. As for modern asians having them, it might be just fashion, or simply like my dad. So that they can pick their ear wax. Chinese are quite open to that sort of thing.

No it's only chinese asian, it's for beauty sake. Other Asian guys such as Indian, Pakistan and South East Asian don't grow nails. They see long nail as ugly and disgusting, therefore many Asian parents always tell their children not to forget to cut their nails.
But eastern Asian guys such as Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese etc have a very high regards on femininity, including that of men. That's why they grow their nails, grow their hair long and act a bit of feminine.

A lot of asian guys (especially the chinese) have a longer fingernail on their little finger so they can spoon the coke out of little plastic bags discreetly. I've seen it done many times in nightclubs around london. especially Heaven nightclub on monday nights (Asian night)-x

I dont really know bout Asian dudes but guys in zimbabwe where i grew up do the same n they always say that it comes in handy when making out wth chics... i didnt really ask for more details:)

Muslims (I believe) have to be clean before praying to Mecca - the long finger nail it to assist with raking out the nose of all deposits so that they can be truly clean before their God.

well I am not an aisan guy, but back in school I had my pinkie nail longer than the others so i could snort coke with it, made it much easier to do it in the bathroom that way.

I think it's in order to slit envelopes open. A kind of permanent letter opener. Very handy!
