i've completed all 16 puzzles. what happens now?

You wait for Virtual Villagers 2 to come out this winter. ; )
You could start another village to see how much more quickly you can solve the thing.

Once you've completed all 16 puzzles, and you've taken your villagers into the cave and got the final message.... well, that's all there is to it -- the game ends there.
From that point on the best you can get is to have your population reach the maximum at 90 villagers and that's that. From there the villagers can basically take care of themselves.... The Golden Child continually replenishes the food supply and restores the crops -- He also continually throws parties which keeps the rest of your Villagers from doing anything else -- so forget even trying to build up tech points.... what's the point really?... there's nothing more to buy.
After you've done it all, all there is left to do is wait for Virtual Villagers 2 to come out which continues on from where VV1 left off...

nothing - you begin to lose interest because there are no more goals, then you stop checking on them as often which causes your population to dwindle until they all die.
sorry for the let down - maybe they'll make a better one next time
