Hey there,
i've been wanting to get my tongue pierced really badly for the past few weeks but HONESTLY, i cant find the courage to go.Does it REALLY hurt? Would i be able to talk because i would have to in order to keep my job (i work weekends so i would get it done on a monday)? I really really want to get it done, so if someone could describe what exactly they do and how painful it is- please let me know! Thank you =)

There are already some good answers here, but I will throw in my two cents. I had mine pierced not quite 10 months ago. The first thing you should do, is go out and eat a good meal before hand, because most people do not feel like eating, and can not tolerate the pain associated with eating directly after a piercing. Easier said than done, but try not to be shaky or nervous, this makes your muscles tense up, and makes you more likely to pull your tongue in when they are preparing to pierce it. Any creditable place, will sit you down, and explain the entire procedure to you. First you should be given some mouthwash, to kill the germs before the piercing takes place. You will probably be given a dribble rag, or a paper towel, because most people do drool while their tongue is hanging out. The techniques used vary in different shops, but most use clamps similar to hemostats, and clamp off the center of your tongue, then inspect your tongue to see how to avoid the vein running down it's center. They will have you take some deep breaths, and will push the hollowed needle through during this time. It is more of a pinch, than an actual pain, IMO, but was totally tolerable. Now they should have you rinse your mouth out once again with mouthwash. They will give you aftercare directions, telling you not to smoke, drink from a straw, etc.... Once I left the shop, I had a cup full of ice that I ate on my way home, to help avoid as much swelling, and I waited 2 hours (which is amazing for me) to smoke a cigarette. The swelling for me was minimal the first day, but increased until about day 3 of the healing process. Good brushing, and mouthwash is a must to avoid infection. Mine was strange to talk with for about 4 days, and akward to eat with for about a week. Mashed potatoes and small bites of soft foods became my best friends. Another thing that makes it a littler harder to eat is the starter bar is kind of long, to allow for swelling. Once your tongue is not so swollen, changing the length of your bar will help as well. After about 4 months, I didn't use mouthwash as often, honestly I felt that twice a day after that long was sufficient. Now when I take it out, it feels so strange, because I have gotten used to it being a part of my daily life. If you do decide after having it done, that you don't want it because the healing process is too much to take, which I have done twice before, just hang in there. It is something you wanted, and you went through all that to get it, so you might as well keep going.

Some people say it hurts really bad, others do not. It depends on your pain tolerance I think. I had mine pierced and then it grew back and I had it done again. The second time hurt worse for me then the first. There will be swelling but if you follow the instructions that the piercer gives you it will help a lot. If you get it done on a Monday it should be feeling better by the weekend. You will probably talk with a lisp at first and it is hard to get used to eating certain things with it as well. It is really up to how bad you want it and if you think you can tolerate the pain that goes with it.

You'll have a lisp for around two weeks, Im getting mine pierced too but I dont worry so much about the pain because it'll hurt only for a little while and you will have that piercing for as long as you want. Besides i've heard it doesnt hurt but if you are still really scared some places will numb it before piercing it. So if youre going to do it, get it done on a Monday its the best time for you because of your job.

First of all.. how old are you? I got my pierced almost a year ago but i took it out about a month ago. Reason being, I felt like its time to mature and honestly im only 19. It was fun while i had it though... I just kinda think its a high school thing. For a week you will probably be debating on whether or not to take it out but if your going to get it done keep it. After it heels it is so much fun to mess with. And its not an unbearable pain.

Tongue pierces are sexy. I don't have one, but I want one. My friend pierced his own tongue. He said it didn't hurt to do it, but afterwards it hurts a little. Like eating solid foods a week after you get it pierced supposable hurts. And it can get infected, but your tongue tends to heal fast. Don't be scared and just do it. Think about it, the pain if any, only last for a few seconds. And the healing is only for a little while...

It is not that terribly painful, when getting it done that is...They put a clamp around your tongue, pull it out, stick the needle with the tongue ring on it...and *poof* ,you are done. Do not smoke or chew tobacco products for several days after having it done. Listerine will keep it from getting infected. I found it was more awkward in speaking, but you get use to it. The first 2 days after, I was uncomfortable, but nothing you can not handle.

it doesnt hurt. You can talk after a few days you will probably still be swollen but it wont be bad. it just doesnt hurt, unless your tongue gets caught in the clamp, that hurts a little.
