DVD is a video medium. A VHS tape is a video medium. Why don't they say, "Get the movie on DVD or VHS video?"

Because for years there were only video tapes. Video became the commonly used term for them. When DVD came along the term video was already well in use for tapes so people just differentiated by using the terms DVD and video. The term VHS isn't really used as a spoken term much because there was also Beta video tape which came out at the same time but it fizzled out fast so there wasn't much need to specify the difference between VHS and Beta. All the "good" video was VHS.

I believe what gets tossed around as the shortest way to say something is what becomes mainstream. saying DVD or video is quicker than DVD or VHS video take the new generation of videogame systems. Wii,PS3,Xbox 360 although we are just starting the generation alot of fans have cut out the Xbox name and say "Have you got the new game for 360 yet?" See it is simpler than saying Xbox360. :-) Hope this helps.

They are forgetting what the "V" in DVD stands for! My children actually correct me when I call a DVD a "video." I, in turn, explain (again) that DVD stands for "Digital Video Disc," emphasizing the word video.

I've never heard anyone say that. Usually what I hear is "DVD or VHS?" or "DVD or Tape?"

Even though it really is, I guess they don't consider DVD to be video.

Good point. Actually, why wouldn't they just say "video"?
