We wouldn't make any money off the rent. His income from the police acadamey wouldn't pay for our mortgage, that is why we would be renting a small apartment. Any reason why this would be foolish? We've been in our house for six months.

I have an idea what Dr. Laura would say... "Your husband is a brave and good soul who wants to help and protect people in your community. You should do whatever you can to help him do this." Maybe you'll agree---some things are just more important than having a house.

Besides, it sounds like it'd just be temporary. Can you lease your house to someone for enough to cover your mortgage payments (or close to it)? If so, I think you should go for it! Your husband will have a chance to achieve his dream---and meanwhile, someone else will be making your house payments for you. Nothing wrong with that!

Eventually, your hubby should make enough as a police officer for you to consider moving back into your house. You didn't mention if you had kids---but if you don't, perhaps you could find work too, and add a 2nd income.

I'm sure you can work this out if you stay positive and optimistic, and remember what an important contribution your husband has a chance to make to the people in your town.

Good luck!
