You don't need to ask people for specific examples. Just understand how easy it is to use almost ANY new word in a sentence:

1. Look up the word in a thesaurus. (As you probably know, that's a dictionary of synonyms---a great book to have around.)

2. Find a synonym for the new word that you already know. (In this case, some familiar synonyms for "altercation" are "quarrel", "fight", and "argument".)

2. Write a sentence where you'd use one of the synonyms, then subsitute the new word:

Joe and John had an argument over a girl they both liked.

Joe and John had an altercation over a girl they both liked.

Remember, synonyms can have slightly different meanings. (In this case, "altercation" means they might've hit each other during the argument, too!) But as long as you look up the new word in a dictionary, too, you should understand the difference well enough to know if you're writing a sentence that's completely goofy.

Cheers, Ander
