A bank has legal right to ask for SS # and any Government Agency that is verifying your identify, before giving you any personal information. You do not have to give it to the Post Office. They require identification, such as a Drivers License, Picture ID, etc. showing your local address Your employer needs to know the SS # in order to pay taxes, etc. on your wages. The police have no right to ask for this personal information. Don't give it to anyone except the above.

aparrently any business out there. You do not have to comply but if you don't they may decline not to accept your business. There are some businesses now going with other numbers besides the social security to identify you.

According to memory...NO ONE! Employers can ask for PROOF by viewing & making a copy of your actual Social Security Card, but no one can just ask you for your #. It says so on the card!
