My boyfriend and I will be cohabiting for about two years or so around KL next year onwards. We are planning to migrate after and are currently looking to buy a two-room condominium (800-1000 sqf), preferably around the Damansara belt (between Bangsar to Bandar Utama). We're budgeting our purchase to about RM 200 000. I'm also wondering if renting is a better option (yes, I'm aware of RPGT). Does anyone have any suggestions? If so, how much and where?

If you have stable finance for lawyer, mortgage, loan, tax, maintainance cost, I suggest you might be better off buying than renting. Hidden cost hurts but it will be your name/house at the end of the day!
However, I suggest you rent it 1st for the next 6 months and slowly do your house hunting for a new house. You need to make sure the unit you buy situated in the right location to your liking, lifestyle and interest. There is no point spending less money on your renting but you have to put up with the morning evening rush hour and traffic jam. Where is your office? How far from Damansara?
In addition, you also need to know about the management, maintainance fees, the facilities and the inner layout/constructions. Some of the developer used cheap labour and material. After 2 years of owning the house the owner often face problems and defects ie. leakage, poor wiring, not properly maintained and etc. This is vital because in case you want to sell the house in the future, it would be easier to find a prospective buyer. Renting is not a bad idea either as supply for condo is higher than demand in KL area. Thus, cheap to rent and good for the short term but not good for a long run.
Goodluck.

The point, a house is costs real nuts. Unless you have decide to live at that area, otherwise you just rent it for a moment, until you and your boyfriend have decided to have a ideal house first.

i say u rent first....dont jump too soon, its best you survey first as price of houses now have gone up, it may come down later on, so dont rush. anyway ur going to move in with your boyfriend, not to say anything, but what if there are some differences, and u decide to split if the house is bought in 2 names, who gets the house....so dont rush

Buy! I've been renting for years, and it seems like a waste. Nothing to show for it.
