Agamemnon was the high king of Greece. All others owed him fealty (strengthened by their prior oaths to help avenge the husband of Helen if he ran into trouble).

If I remember correctly Agamemnon was the king.
odeussys,ajax,achilles..and so on were kings of thier own lands who fought under the one banner of Agamemnon...
I'll have to read it again..it's been alot of years since I have.

Didn't you kinda answer your own question? He was Menelaus's *brother*. Also, Helen was his sister-in-law. There are lots of family connections in the story. So none of it happened randomly.
