Removing the gravel in your tank can cause a huge problem with the health of your fish. The beneficial bacteria that is growing in it is too valuable. Try buying a marine-quality light bulb (the light doesn't have enough red spectrum for algae to thrive). Stir up the gravel a bit every other day, and reduce the amount of light in your tank on a daily basis. Increase the frequency of water, decrease the amount you are feeding and buy a pair of apple or mystery snails.

I agree with the other person on using a gravel washer. In order for algae to grow, it has to have light and food.
If your aquarium is by a window, try to pull the curtains during the daytime. If you are using the aquarium light as a nightlight, only keep it on no more then 2 hours at a time twice a day. You could also buy an algae eater. Feed your fish less food, no more then they can eat in 3 minutes twice a day. Maybe you have a lot of fish in your tank, and the algae is living off of the fish waste. By doing a 25% water change every couple weeks or so, you will be removing the extra waste and left over fish food.

By cutting down on the amount of light that goes into your aquarium, buying an algae eater, doing partial water changes with a gravel washer, and feeding less, you will see less algae in your tank.

No don't toss it. Cultured gravel is an essential part of the biological filter, and keeps the Nitrogen Cycle in tact (along with good filtration).

If it has become unsightly - just get yourself a Python No-Spill for when you do your water changes, and vacuum the gravel only once a month.

Good luck!
