Am I paranoid or does it just seem that people will do anything to another person to make themselves feel elevated or to get ahead? Are the most of the people you know phony and self-important? I'm tired of living this way.

Best case scenario, people are trying to secure their position because they know how reversals of fortune can wipe out life savings, etc. That's one possible reason people seem so all about "me, me, me"
That's letting a lot of people off way too easy, though. In fact, there are people who amass such wealth it would take them 300 lifetimes to spend it all, while people starve and live under bridges in cardboard boxes near them. These people put the dog in dog-eat-dog. There's plenty to be negative, paranoid and pessimistic about. You're right.

Well, the sad truth is this world is very unfair, and you just have to deal with it the best way you can... I totally agree with you, but if you dont want to be surround by phony/negative people then you should find different friends. Maybe people with a more positive look on life.... And dont worry it's not that hard, all you have to do is have a big heart, and let people come to you...

The scholars of the day would have you believe we evolved from animals. So, the post-modern philosophy is that you are right to just go about your business, taking whatever is yours at any and all cost to those around you. The strong eat the weak, "inferior races" fall by the wayside, and those who profit by this are admired. They call this "justice".
You are awake to things that few people see. This is a good thing for you, but it will cause you great pain and misery until the time comes when all accounts are settled. Have faith, be strong, and do not buy in to the manipulative lies of the day.

I find a lot of people are that exact way. Yes this is a dog eat dog world. You'll have very few people in this world that you can trust. I all ways say that the less people know about you the less they can use against you.

Unfortunately, there are people who will trample others to get ahead. I believe in karma though, so if you do good things, it will come back to you full circle. Just remember that of all the bad people out there, there is also just as many good people.

The world is a cold, cruel uncaring place. You have no choice but to find your own path. Read Voltaire's Candide, it may give you some perspective.
You can still find happiness, but you need to learn to love yourself and become self reliant. If you don't need anyone, no one can hurt you, can they?

there are people who chase the brass ring all their lives and will gallop over anyone to get it.
Not everyone is like this, and the fact that you see this is a good omen.
