After the Foley scandal it's more obvious than ever that this is the predominant opinion. Even just one sexually explicit instant message from an adult to an adolescent minor can mean jailtime. Being virtually solicited for sex can scar such a "child" forever. But why don't people give a damn about bullying, violence and other forms of abuse that are commonplace in schools and households? Physical and/or mental abuse by peers of age can be equally scarring to a young personality. It can go unnoticed for ages, also because it's often perceived as normal.

I don't intend to downplay Foley's acts, but I can't help wondering why the public opinion is so blind.

This country was founded by Puritans, and we still have those values when it comes to sex. Anything dealing with sex is dangerous, bad, foul, and should be kept away from anyone under the age of 30. That seems to be the main public opinion. In other countries that isn't the case. For example, the age of consent in Holland is 12.

I wish I knew. My son is in a school which has a "no bullying policy" and it couldn't be a bigger joke. The children are told to speak up, but when they do, they are ridiculed by the teachers as being whiny, or heaven forbid, overreacting! I believe there needs to be more training for the adults in charge, so that they may be able to handle the requests for help in a better manner. As it is now, my son has tried to help a little girl at school on three occasions, and each time has been told to mind his own business, or to quit over-reacting. When they look back on the school shootings, they always seem to say that the children with the guns needed to be heard, or helped in some way. Why are the teachers waiting for the gunshots? Help these poor children NOW, before it is too late.
It makes my heart hurt to know how many little kids go home each night with the burden of going to school the next day.

Because these days the perverts are coming out of the woodwork, they are every where and now on the PC, they are constantly trolling for kids, this society is getting rotten to the core. Bullying is between kids, not adults that's the big difference, but I no what you mean about bullying, when I was in school kids were not that cruel, they did tease, but not to the point that kids kill them selves like they do today. I feel kids are more cruel these days, since they took prayer out of school in 1960 the kids have been getting worse over the years, now they are killing each other in schools, and more into drugs than the baby boomers of the sixties, but that was the sexual revolution generation and they also stood against authority of any kind, now their kids are worse, and their grandchildren worse then their children, and it will continue.

That's a great question and I agree that they should treat those as equal problems but sexually assaulting some one is very bad especially when the kid is a victim and the assault was by an adult because adults for one know better and are taking advantage of their age and strength by doing that and second it probably does more damage to a kid who has been sexually assaulted by an adult then bullied by another kid. I personally can't give the truest answer though because neither has happened to me and i don't know which is more frightening or life-changing.

Public opinion is blind? The public has the right to know if they're kids are being threatened by adults, no matter if its sexual harassment or violence. People want to know about this, THEY ARE NOT BLIND.

But anyway, you think that a 13 year old bully should be in jail just as the same as an adult who wants to molest a kid?

Get real.

Relationship's between men and boys like this have been going on since the western Renaissance. having an older male partner was the only way to get ahead during the renaissance age, but this is the 21st century, you would have thought that our society would have evolved past these disgusting and disturbing practices.
