"As defined by the United States Census Bureau, the Southern region of the United States includes 16 states and is split into three smaller units, or divisions:
The South Atlantic States: Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia (plus the District of Columbia);
The East South Central States: Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee;
The West South Central States: Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas."
Everyone I know--and apparently even Wikipedia, which I've cited here--considers Florida to be part of the Southern states.

??? In all my 53 years I've never heard anyone not consider Florida a southern state. It is a southern state. Always has been.

Well, if you're in northern Florida (like Jacksonville, not so much Gainesville but definitely the surrounding area), it's very redneck-y and much like any other Southern area. I mean, the quintessential Southern rock band, Lynyrd Skynyrd is from Jacksonville.
But South Florida is a weird place that isn't much like the rest of the South. Even though it's very far south. Very clubby, kind of a Caribbean feel to a lot of it. More cosmopolitan in many instances. I wouldn't say that S. Florida is anything like where I grew up in Appalachia.

Well, I see there are some people in Georgia that are still having a hard time getting out of the 19th century.

Florida's culture and ethnic composition is very different from the other southern states. It draws huge numbers of tourists (both American and foreign) and retirees, and so is a virtual cross-section of the country.

I always did. I didn't know it was an issue--it's clearly in the southern part of the country.

Because its been overrun with northeasterners and race integration that turned it into A) a high crime hellhole, or B) extremely expensive housing to live in the few remaining, non-retirement neighborhoods.
Also there is no southern hospitality there as its mostly transplanted northeasterners.
