Ear infection gone wrong?

My 19-month-old son has an ear infection. When his doctor looked into one of his ears, he also noticed that there was a considerable wax build-up in there as well.

I've also been concerned lately that he doesn't hear me very well, which I mentionned to the doctor. Because of all these factors, my son is being referred to an ear, throat and nose specialist. The waiting time is approximately 3 weeks and I don't want to wait that long. Should I take him to the hospital right away where I know there is a specialist at hand, or as the family doctor suggested, should I wait until my son is done his antibiotics in 2 weeks and reassess as this time.

Any thoughts?

If it were me, I would wait for the antibiotics to do their job and then reassess. Unless there was pain involved. When the infection has cleared, it will be easier for the specialist to look for other things.

But the ear infection was the first thing to be dealt with and cleared up. I'd wait until this round of antibiotics were done and the infection is out of the picture. The next step will be for the ENT to tackle the wax problem (and teach you how to keep it in check). Then when both these physical problems are taken care of, his hearing can be checked.

My daughter was really bad with ear infections. Wait to see the specialist. Unless your baby is oozing from the ear, everything should be fine. Taking the baby to the hospital, waiting in emerg for hours on end is just going to cause you and your lil one stress. If your child has more than 4 infections in a year, he/she may require tubes.

Same thing happened to my daughter but she is fine some times cleaning the wax can break some type of skin in their and it will grow back, but if the drum itself has broken then their is nothing you can do. I would just wait for the appointment, just because there is an ER doesn't mean that there is a specialist on hand.

You are probably ok with waitin until the infection is cleared up, but if it gives you more peace, then by all means take your baby to the hospital specialist! There's no such thing as being over-protective or a little extra assurance, and kudos to you for being such a concerned and attentive mom!

I would wait because the specailest has specail stuff that they will remove the ear wax with and they will also put him on a med to take the pain awai from them removing it.

JUST WAIT UNTIL HE GOES TO THE SPECIALIST. WE CAN'T GET ALL THE WAX OUT OF THEIR EARS. JUST CONTINUE GIVING THE ANTIBIOTICS. THE TIME WILL GO BY FAST. HE WILL BE ALRIGHT.

Trust what you think is right. If you take him to the hospital you are right they will look at him right away and you will not have to wait so long. Thats what I would do.

monitor it, it should start to look better soon. If it gets worse, especially if it get dramatically worse don't hesitate or wait.
