Just curious. I respect Joe Torre, and everything he has done for the game of baseball. My question is

If he had managed The Tigers this year (instead of Jim Leyland), would he have taken them this far?

Just a hypothetical question.

Your thoughts?

I don't think so. The reason is, Leyland had to really lay down the law early in the season. The Tigers got a real eye opener when he did it. I think that made the difference in how they (Tigers) approached the rest of the season. Maybe Joe would have been alittle too laid back and as a result the Tigers might have ended up with an okay season but nothing like they did!!

Billy Martin replaced into rather useful at each and every place he controlled and he could take mediocre expertise (like the 1981 Oakland A's) and lead them to right into a playoff group. Joe Torre replaced into terrible with the Mets in the 70s, replaced into additionally a perennial loser with the Cardinals and Braves in the 1880s and did no longer win until he have been given to the Yanks, with a loaded cubboard (youthful Jeter, Bernie, Pettitte, Rivera, etc.) and George's money to spend on in spite of they choose. Torre is a form guy and that i admire him, yet Billy could outmananage him any day!

Would he have taken them this far? Probably. You can't judge how a manager does when you don't even give him a chance.

I say that anyone can take their team to the play offs. All they need is a few... manager skills.

Barney the Dinosaur would have won 90 games as Yankees manager with their $200 million lineup.

I doubt it. I don't think he knows how to unlock the potential like Leyland did.

No, but that doesn't make Leyland a better manager.

Just better for that team.
