The alternator only has 3 wires going into it, - unless it is a real old one that has a separate voltage regulator! The heavy wire goes from the alternator to the battery (possibly by a devious route), it is held onto the alternator by a nut!The other two wires should be on(in) a plug that plugs into the side (or end) of the alternator at the back end! So I would suggest that you find the plug, and see if it has one wire missing!! You can guess where the missing one went to! (or came from). I am assuming that you have the "disconnected wire" there where you can see it! If you really lost the wire, you will probably find it flopping around somewhere close to where the remaining wire in the plug to alternator come out of the wiring loom/bundle .
