I know what it is and what it does, but I want to know where did that term come from? And why did it end up being named that.

802.11 is the number of the IEEE standard specification documentation that describes how your device is built and works. The b and g are revisions to the document.

Means cable and broadband together and any computer that got a 802.11a or g can use it............
