I bought this computer from someone and they forgot the password. How, oh how, do we now get into it. I can't get to the desktop, the start button or anything. We tried every password he THINKS he may have put, but no luck

Try this. Boot the computer in safe mode (hit f8 repeatedly until boot menu appears) when it finishes booting the "hidden" administrator account should be visible. If it hasn't been assigned a password you should be able to log on and go to user accounts (in the control panel) to change or create new accounts.

But, if that doesn't work there is a little bit more technical way to do it and it requires you to find someone to download a CD iso and burn you a boot cd. http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html
This link will get you to a boot cd that will reset the admin password on your computer. Read the documentation carefully, so you don't miss a step. It won't mess anything up its just a little on the geeky side. It says its for windows NT but it works just fine on windows xp sp2

Windows Password recovery
http://www.loginrecovery.com

This site provides a tool to recover lost Windows XP passwords. It works for administrator and user accounts, it doesn't change the password just tells you the old one. It works with encrypted files (EFS) and password hashes. It even works if no passwords at all are known for the machine (as long as you have another computer with internet access to view this website with).

Author claims it also works with Windows NT and Windows Server 2003 and Windows Longhorn, but the BEST thing about it is the fact that it won't reset your passwords, but simply reveal them for you to remember and then use.

Give it a try. The author would like to receive feedback. There is a free service as well as a priority service that will retrieve your passwords within minutes. The fee for the priority service is very cheap, and is really just to cover server costs.

Note: You'll need a blank floppy to run the process.

Update: Author now offers the same tool as a CD image for those of you who do not have a floppy in their computer.

Usage, instructions and additional information can be found at

Hello. When you first start up the computer, and just before it fires up windows, you should see a dark screen come up that shows one of the "function" symbols (and maybe a number with it) at this point hold the "f8" button and it will bypass the password system. Hope this helps. M.

Do you know anything about opening the computer up? If you do unplug the box and open the computer. On the motherboard there are jumpers on it that you need to remove then close the box and reset the computer. This will work if you do it right. But remember after it works you need to go back into the box and replace the jumpers were it was located in the beginning.

If it is Windows just go into Safe Mode (Press F8 after you turn your computer on) and click Administrator and then go to Start > Control Panel > (Classic Menu) User Accounts and change the password there.

Assuming that your operating system is a Microsoft product, I would recommend going to the source (see weblink). Good luck!

you need to boot in safe mode to bypass the password protection. once in safe mode (F8) go under your control panel, and there should be an option for user accounts...you can create another as admin to log yourself in, after that reboot and go into normal mode and click on the account you just made....

you may need to re-install the windows operating system on that computer, or if you have someone with computer hardware experience available to help, have them reset the BIOS.
