11.15g of pure iron are allowed to react with oxygen fo form an oxide, Fe(x)O(y). If the product weighs 14.3g, find the simplest formula of the compound.

1st subtract the starting mass from the end mass to find the mass of the oxygen.
Next convert the grams into moles by dividing by the atomic mass.
Lastly find the simplest whole number ratio bewteen these numbers

11.15g Fe=.2 moles
14.3-11.15=3.15g O = .2 moles O
so the formula is FeO
