It's because he's a Taurus (that may not be the only reason, but trust me it is a huge factor). YOu see Taurus' are very very stubborn. They do not like to give in (even when they are wrong). It is hard to get an idea or notion into their thick heads...and they are so stubborn/unchanging often times they will fight forever--just to not give up their argument.
I know Gemini's are very good at arguing too...and since your signs are "neighbor" signs you do have a lot of the same characteristics so you butt heads a lot. The tip for a Taurus is word things in a way that makes them think they are benefitting....they always like to come out ahead.

Well I am stubborn and Independent. He is confident in himself and likes freedom to.
