Madam i can not tell you where it is for reason better left unknown. however exactly ten days ago i found 'the back of beyond', i was going home after spending the day and most of the evening with family. i had a long journey ahead me, 60 miles or so, when for some crack notion i decided to take a short cut. i turn my car of the motorway and venture into the rural wilderness that some of us call 'the countryside'. OK i got lost fairly soon but my stubbornness kept me going. until the the car died, after the usual inflammatory i reach for my cell phone --- no coverage. 'right that's it' i said crossly. got out of the car and walk for quiet a distance could not find any help or coverage for the phone. it was very dark and overcast before i got back to the car where i spent the night shivering both from the cold and fear (to many Christopher Lee horror films). daylight came and i eventually got help. but if that place is not 'the back of beyond' nothing is.

summary: shortcuts can lead you into 'the back of beyond'

Depends where you live. I grew up in a small village near Kendal, Cumbria, which I considered to be the 'back of beyond'.
When in Australia I met a Swiss woman who came from a small town in the Emmental (the back of beyond). When she told me she was going to Alice Springs I asked her why? She said there were six families from her home town living there. Now that's going from the back of beyond to the back of beyond in my book.

Go as far as you can... (beyond)... and then go farther (to the back side).

If you're planning a trip, I'd recommend bringing a canteen and some trail mix. Good luck.

depends entirely where you live. here in Canada, its about 200 miles from the nearest city, In Australia, its in the middle of the desert. In the States, I suspect its any place that doesn't get cell phone service.
