It's such a pain in the bum changing your duvet cover (I sometimes have to climb right in to get the corners staright!) so by putting a sheet in between your body and your pain in the bum duvet cover you only need to wash the sheets frequently, thus saving a lot of swearing and time!

If you change the sheets often enough, you don't have to change the duvet cover every time - it's a total pain anyway especially when you're a small woman trying to put on a double duvet cover; sheets are much easier.

You don't have to. I do because sometimes I want to be covered by only a sheet. There are duvet covers that are rather fancy and expensive and so the under sheet saves the life of the duvet cover. You just suit yourself. I do believe that originally the duvet cover was very simple and used on its own without any top sheet.

its a matter of choice, the sheet is wormer and softer than the duvet.
