Because someone who provides selfless service will always be looking out for the best interest of the people in general and not focusing on the leaders personal interests.

I certainly know that if someone is leading me in whatever area, I want them to be selfless and put the needs of the group before the personal needs of themselves...

It is nice when absolute power doesn't corrupt absolutely...

In order to lead you have to be able to consider everyone elses needs before you think of yourself. And many times you will have to make decisions that maybe are not what you want but benefit others or benefit the company/cause you work for.

Because it's a good indication that they won't be corrupted by their power. They're thinking about what's good for everyone else, not being motivated by their own personal interests.
