If you're allowed nonfiction, many of the revolutionaries were writing back then- Alexander Hamilton, Ben Franklin, etc. For fiction, though, there's Mark Twain, Edith Wharton, Ambrose Bierce, umm... Poe? Maybe? Nathaniel Hawthorne, Louisa May Alcott, Melville. That's a few, at least.
