You might notice you're getting a big range of answers to this question - that's because every guinea pig is different! Guinea pigs TEND to have sensitive respiratory systems, but some are more sensitive than others. It's possible to raise a happy, healthy guinea pig on pine bedding - BUT, it's also possible that your piggies - or one of your piggies - will react poorly to it. You may never know unless they have a full-blown upper respiratory infection, because as prey animals they instinctively try to "hide" symptoms of weakness. So, the safest route? CareFresh! My piggies insist on it, and these are some picky fellas...they even insisted on making themselves a website...

Good luck!

Pine bedding is fine the only problem with is you have to watch out for mite. the best to use are yesterdays new, care fresh, aspen, woody pet, and cell sorb, DO NOT use cedar as it has aromatic oils in it which over time can be dangerous to your piggy or the green pine shaving it has a chemical in it to control odor, again dangerous. Key trick to changing you cage, if have not changed it in 6 or 7 day and it smells then the next change cage should be made a day sooner until you are changing it before you can smell it, I change mine every 4 day, I use pine bedding, at any given time I can have so 40 piggies here in my home, I am part of Have-A-Heart Guinea Rescue, if you would like to visit our site we are found at http://www.petfinder.org/shelters/NJ250.html

I wish that pet stores would become more aware of the hazards that pine and cedar shavings have for rodents. Please do not use pine or cedar shavings for your cavy, it will only cause respiratory heartache for both of you later on. Pine and cedar although they will cut down on the odor, will harm your piggie due to the oils in them.
from a site I found:
" Cedar shavings should be avoided at all costs. Cedar has been shown in studies to be hazardous, causing chronic respiratory conditions in mammals. Some animals are even allergic to cedar, and can develop severe skin rashes or more severe respiratory conditions. The problem with cedar shavings stems mostly from the oils that give it its aromatic scent. Unfortunately, it is this aroma that makes cedar so inviting as a bedding, as it covers up ammonia odors well.
Like cedar shavings, pine shavings are also believed to be hazardous to the health of small mammals, though this is more widely disputed. Like cedar, pine is a soft wood whose oils give it an aromatic scent. Although there is still some debate as to how dangerous pine really is, many serious owners of small mammals such as guinea pigs, rats, mice and the like will recommend against its use. If forced to choose between pine and cedar, pine is definitely the better choice, but you really should avoid both if at all possible. "

Please! for the health of your animal, use Aspen shavings. You can get an enormous bag from Walmart for 7 bucks.
Happy Piggies :)

Though pine bedding is often "okay" for guinea pigs (NOT for other small rodents such as rats and mice), it is definitely not your best choice. Aspen shavings or Carefresh are much safer, as are compressed paper pellet litters such as Yesterday's News.

What I use for my rodents is wood stove pellet fuel, which is the same as the compressed pine cat litters, but can be bought for $4 a bag instead of $15. Note: though this litter is made of pine, it does not contain the same toxic chemicals found in pine shavings.

You can find kiln-dried pine shavings at Tractor Supply Company. It is about $5 for a 50 pound bag. :) Kiln-dried makes it perfectly safe for your pets. They sell it as mulch.
