it is for the glare. It protects the playes from the glare of the sun. And i guess in the case of night games, those really bright lights.
That's what it used to be for anyway. I'm not sure if it's still like it now.

The dark color refracts light so that they can squint against the glare of staduim lights or the sun and still see the football.

It actually absorbs the sunlight helping the players to see. If it is a night game it will absorb the stadium lights and make it a little easier to see. In the end its mostly because it looks cool and its like a tradition. It doesnt help much at all.
