There is no "best" book! Some of my favorites are the Harry Potter books, The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, The Lovely Bones and Lucky by Alice Sebold, and The Giver!

In fantasy, In the Realms of the Gods by Tamora Pierce. You have to read the Song of the Lioness Quartet first, and the first three of the Immortals Quartet. It's worth all the reading before it.
Mystery, Chasing Vermeer
Science Fiction, The Giver.

Moby Dick by Herman Melville
If I were stranded on a desert island this is the one book I would want to have. Not only is it an adventure story, it's a bible. encyclopedia, and philosophical essay. Every time you read it you find a deeper level which makes you think critically.

"Earth In the Balance", by Al Gore
Not because it is so well written or exciting, but because of the truth it contains.
Also, "The Babysitter's Itch". It's the only title of a trash book I remember reading as a teenager, so it must have been good. It has a very simple plot, although I can't remember what that is.
