It matters what type of map your looking at...
Say a topographical map shows you valleys, mountain elevation, which was the creek runs and what type of rocks.
A regular map shows cities, towns, distances, high ways, freeways, and routes. But most importantly it shows the reststops.

It depends on the type of map. You can learn the names and the locations of the 7 continents and the 5 oceans on a world map. Other maps may help you identify locations of states, countries, capitals, populations, manufactured products, etc.

Geography, street layout, land layout, museum placement, location of ruins, post offices, trees, parks, pretty much anything can be learned from a map. A map is a diagram that provides information and is composed of graphic representation of objects.
