As you all may have heard "The Little Mermaid" is being re-released. But what many of you may not know is the story of the very first release ever of "The Little Mermaid". The very first release of "The Little Mermaid" had a golden penis on the front cover on the castle. I swear its true...I wouldn't lie. Apparently it was discovered by Disney and the remaining stock was recalled. But, within that short amount of time some of the questionable movies were purchased by the public. MY MOTHER was one of the few who had the honor of bringing the "golden bundle of joy" home to her 3 year old daughter. YESI HAVE ONE OF THE ORIGINALS! I was wondering, HOW MANY HAVE HEARD ABOUT THIS? and HOW MANY HAVE AN ORIGINAL?

Disney locks up it's movies and then re-releases them on a schedule.

The real great kid's films have an entirely new generation of viewers every 7 years or so.

When VHS, and then DVD came out, disney studios continued this practice, releasing a film for a short time, then keeping it off the shelves several years.

What was in the picture was some moorish towers. Moorish towers DO look like penises (or more correctly phalluses) as do space rockets and many other items.

In the Mermaid cover, however, the resemblance to a human body part is a little to strong, the covers were recalled, but this was not why the movie was taken out of release.

At one time, these "special" covers commanded a premium on E-Bay, i don't know if your mom has a treasure or just an old movie in her posession.

Yes, I've heard about this several times, and I did have one of the original VHS boxes as a child. However, it is not actually a phallus. Taken from Snopes.com:

"The theatrical posters were done before the original release of the film, but the video cover art was not created until a few months before the home video version hit the market. Rushed to complete the video artwork (featuring towers that were rather phallic to begin with), the artist hurried through the background detail (at "about four in the morning") and inadvertently drew one spire that bore a rather close resemblance to a penis. The artist himself didn't notice the resemblance until a member of his youth church group heard about the controversy on talk radio and called him at his studio with the news. "

my aunt and uncle had this when I was younger. I know its true. I wonder if they still have it. Disney is continually re-releasing classics as it is a huge way of making money. once they quit selling it in stores. They put it in the "vault". This causes pople to run out and buy it in fear of never being able to get the "PATINUM EDITION" ever again. After that you cannot buy a new copy any more except from ebay or at a pawn shop or garage sale, etc. We have been buying as many as we can for our two girls as they come out

I have an original, and apparently there is a perve at Disney. If you listen closely in Aladdin, where the Genie is a bee and is talking to "Prince Ali" on the Viranda he wispers sex I think in his ear, and this one is for sure, in The Lion King, when grown Simba plops down on a rock and all these petals fly in the air? It spells out Sex........ Swear ta god!

i have the original. and the movie was rereleased only because thats what disney doest to make lots of money.

all of their movies are released more than once. all disney movies are only sold for a short amount of time and then thrown into what is called the "disney vault". they then remake it into a special edition (which right now is the platinum double disc series).

Once upon a time there was a capitalistic juggernaut called the Disney Company, and to ensure that they sit on top of an obscene pile of cash forever more, they discontinue and then re-release, all spiffied up and re-mastered, their best selling animated movies. Can you say cash cow?

I have heard about this and many other disney "secrets" in the movies. In the lion king when adult simba plops down and dust flies up, if you pause it the dust spells out sex. There are others but I can't remember all of them.
