associative law:

(a + b ) + c = a +( b + c) [ idem for X : you just replace + by X]

Example :

(2 + 3) + 5 = 2 + (3 + 5) if a = 2 , b = 3 and c= 5

So 5 + 5 = 2 + 8

10 = 10 (true)

Commutative law:

Example:

a + b = b + a if a= 3 , b= 2 [samething for X]

3 + 2 = 2 + 3

6 = 6 (true)

For your problems we have:

4 X (m X n) = (4 Xm) X n

4(mn) = (4m)n (assocative law)

(3a + b) + 2c = 2c + (3a + b) (commutative law)

when you have friends, you associate with them, right?
that's the associative property, things in a group.
when you commute, you travel, going from one place to another, right?
that's the commutative property, switching places.
I think the others have answered your question, I just gave you a way to remember it.
(also for later, identity, like your own identity, stays the same; and distributive - like in distribute the papers or Wal-mart distribution center, means to "pass out"
