its called darkwave, its basic goth music, 80s goth was not anything like the goth of today in style or music, but goths arent all that dark at their core, they just happen to see the beauty the darkness holds, i happen to consider myself goth, but i also consider myself a very happy person, goth is really just about the beauty in darkness, and the music (that varies quite a bit, just to clear this up metal is not goth)...

darkwave is a perfect goth example, both the cure and the cruxshadows are consiered darkwave, check them both out and see how differant they are, theyre both also considered "goth"

The Cure resemble the original goth band Bauhaus, check them out, i think you'd like them

The Cure is not goth, per say, although most goths do like their stuff. Their look is very 80s, which is when the goth look originated, and Robert Smith did play with Siouxsie & the Banshees for a bit, so that's where the look comes from. Thier music is rather eclectic, and they can sound very gothic at times, and at others they're mainstream pop.

They're old :)

Essentially, they were sad in the 80's. They wore the dark clothes, the smeared lipstick, etc. I wouldn't put money on it, but I'd have to guess that if there were no Cure in the 80's, there wouldn't be a goth movement now.

And as for why they're not that dark, well - they've been successful. With that much money, it's hard to find things to be depressed about :)

The Cure were originally a postpunk band, around at the time when punk was mellowing out and goth was coming into existence. They were heavily influenced intellectually by existentialist forms of thinking (a la' Camus) and musically by bands such as The Damned and Joy Division. Is it any wonder, then, that they turned out the way they did?

They're 80's goth, were new romantics became a bit moody and started wearing black, the beginning of goth, totally different thing to today's artists such as Marylin Manson and that rather scary Norwegian death metal, but they all stem from the same place. Adam ant.
