i want to tell you that i can't open the notebook to read the number so that i can install the software from the internet

go to the compaq website and go to the support page enter your notebook model and it should give you the drivers for that model.

I just checked out this site for you.
Go to www.gateway.com
On the topic SUPPORT list click on PRODUCT SUPPORT.
In the section of STEP 2....just below that you will see just under serial # space box and submit
HOW TO FIND MY SERIAL # <<< click on that.
In the first catagory of computer products...click on notebooks.
Just continue you and they will find your number for you.
Also before you start, look under your notebook and you should see a sticker of at least 10 or 13 digit numbers. That will help you too with this site.

Right click on my computer, go to the hardware tab, click on device manager then click on network adapters. you should see the name of your network card.
