The www does stand for World Wide Web and this prefix denotes that an HTML connection is being requested from the domain. You can have other prefixes for what is known as 'sub domains'. For example, look at the address bar for this page. You'll notice that it starts with 'answers.yahoo.com'. This allows a domain host to 'break up' their many different areas into sub-domains that can then be managed more effiencently.
