with windows vista on the horizon, would it be wise to wait for it before purchasing? i'm thininking black friday might have some deals. the core duo by intel just came out so i would think intel wouldn't announce another chip for a little while. also, is a dell a good laptop? there is one for $629 core duo, 512mb, 60gb 5200 hd.

Well black friday is always good for deals, but the question is, how long do you want to wait? Alot of the deals on black friday will involve crappy laptops with Celeron processors, although you may be lucky enough to get a cheap Core Duo. Windows Vista will probably stink for at least the first year after it is released. I don't recommend rushing out to buy it.

Dell laptops are pretty decent with one exception. They use crappy graphics cards. 90% of them use Intel Graphics which are terrible and will barely be enough to run Vista if at all.

In it's current state Vista is a very demanding resource hog that uses up to 800MB of RAM even when idling. It also demands a more powerful video card than any other operating system ever made. That is why you will be limited if you go with Intel graphics. You should look for ATI or Nvidia graphics instead.

Remember, laptops aren't upgradeable like PCs. You can upgrade RAM, but you are stuck with whatever video card is there when you buy it.

It depends. If you have a need for a new laptop then buy one, but if you can wait until Thanksgiving and X-mas you can get one cheap. Also after the new year, stores will be have returned items for sale really cheap.

Any of the PIII will be able to run Vista.

yes it would probably be the best idea to wait for the next gen comp to come out from microsoft, be aware that the price will be jacked way up for the next six months or so after it comes out! Dell is also a good CHEAP company to buy from, but on the other hand, i personally prefer windows but you may think differently about the subject. On average it is probably about $100 per 10 gigs. hope it helps.
