The most common aluminum compound is aluminum oxide. Aluminum ore is bauxite, which is essentially aluminum oxide. Pure sintered forms of Al2O3 is also called "alumina" which is a ceramic. That is used in body armour for soldiers and vehicles. Single crystal Al2O3 is sapphire -- with minor impurities, it is a gemstone.
